Our year of programming in review, from our Climate Equity Series to our CELA awards, community tree plantings and more.

As the holiday season is upon us, we wanted to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to you for your incredible support throughout the year. Your generosity has not only made a significant impact on our organization, but has also brought joy and positive change to the lives of those we serve.

As we look forward to the coming year with hope and optimism, we wanted to reflect on the amazing accomplishments from this past year that YOU made possible.

2023 Programming Highlights

Our programs align with the 3 key areas of our mission: environmental education, urban revitalization and green economics advocacy. Individual programs may focus on just one of these areas, or may have elements of all three – depending on the specific project. Here is a look at our 2023 programming recap.

Environmental Education

Providing curriculum, resources and tools to instruct youth and adults on environmental best practices, innovations and other important topics.

2023 Climate Equity Series: Climate Equity means ensuring that all communities have the opportunity to benefit from resources that promote sustainable living, such as renewable energy, employment and adaptation solutions. In October, we hosted our Climate Equity Forum series at Stoneview Nature Center featuring US Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove. The event attracted a nationwide audience of 75+ individuals.

Sustainable Holiday Boutique and Crafting: As a way to promote sustainable gifting, we hosted our first Sustainable Holiday Boutique and Crafting earlier this month at the Stoneview Nature Center in Culver City. All vendors at the event were selling sustainable, ethically sourced crafts and gifts to allow the community to complete holiday shopping with earth-friendly gifts.

G.W. Carver Environmental Legacy Awards (CELA): As our biggest fundraiser and event of the year, the event honors the legacy of Dr. George Washington Carver and his well-documented past, as an inventor, educator, scientist, painter, botanist and conservationist. While also honoring the accomplishments of members in the community who have made extraordinary accomplishments within the environmental movement. Our 2023 event featured some amazing guest speakers including; Los Angeles City Councilmember, Curren Price, California Senator,Sydney Kamlager, and Comedian and Actor/ Comedian, Kente Scott. Our 2023 honorees included; First African American Astronaut Candidate and renowned sculpture, Ed Dwight, Director of STEM Education Synergy Academies,Barbara Shannon, EdD, Executive Director of the Baldwin Hills Conservancy, David McNeil, and Chief Sustainability and Economic Development Officer, Nancy Sutley.

Revitalizing Urban Open Space

Planting trees, developing green space, creating green space on school grounds, adding parks and implementing projects to protect the environment in underserved, ignored areas.

Tree Plantings: In 2023, we hosted two tree planting events in Edward Vincent Park and HACLA and planted a total of 35 trees in the Los Angeles area.

MLK Day of Service: On January 14, 2023, we hosted a Community Cleanup day at Hyde Park and partnered with LADWP volunteers.

Blackwelder Community Greenbelt: California Greenworks is currently working to restore the loss of habitat in the Blackwelder Tract of lower Ballona Creek. We seek to create a green infrastructure network along the boundaries of Culver City and Los Angeles. Stormwater gardens, bike trails, and walking paths can unite this portion of the Lower Ballona Creek while increasing opportunities for the pollination of the native flora. In 2023, we expanded our partnership with Baldwin Hills and Urban Watershed Conservancy to move the needle forward on the project. Here are a few renderings for the project.

Green Economics Advocacy

We promote youth to explore careers in the green economy, providing tools to enter the workforce. We also engage adults and provide opportunities for furthering education in the green industry.

High School Education: In 2023, we hosted a number of educational programs for high school students. Through each program, we aim to educate and inspire young people to pursue lifestyles and careers that support a green economy.

Intro to Green Jobs: This class helps students build their resumes, practice interviewing skills, and develop a cover letter in a way that will attract careers in the green economy.

Environmental Literacy/Green Book Club: Students have the opportunity to choose from a selection of environmental books. On a regular basis, we meet with the students and discuss themes and concepts of the books. Once we finish a book, we take the students on a “field trip” that reinforces concepts we learned from the book.

Primary Education Programming:

Green Art: From Kindergarten to high school seniors, California Greenworks will host sustainable and upcycled art projects in classrooms. An example of a green art project could be setting up recycling containers, teaching the students about the recycling process, and completing an art project together.

Greening School/Site: Designed for middle and high school students, we educate how students can make their school more “green”. The students then research and design a green project that could be implemented in their school. Students learn how to conduct such a larger project, how to analyze data collected, and at the end students present their findings to school/site administrators.

Ocean Explorers: This is a 4-week program for middle and high school aged students to learn about marine science, environmental science and conservation principles. Students have the opportunity to participate in science experiments and field trips to ocean and marine centers.

Looking to 2024

In the new year, we will continue to expand and develop our Blackwelder Community Greenbelt project, design and implement more educational curriculum, and host our EJ Conference.

We look forward to the coming year with hope and optimism, and we are excited to continue our journey together. Thank you for being a vital part of our community, and for making a positive impact that extends far beyond the holiday season.

Be a part of our impact

There are a number of ways you can join us in 2024 from joining our email list, adopting a tree, hosting one of our educational programs, attending one of our events, volunteering your time, or telling a friend about us.

Why do equity and justice appear to be a central issue in dealing with the climate change problem?

As climate change increases, and environmental hazards become more prevalent, the imbalance in climate equity becomes more and more apparent. Today it is hard to dispute that human activity has a negative impact on our climate and that this impact has created a disproportionate ability to fully enjoy human rights.

In fact, climate change has profound impacts that expands throughout a wide variety of human rights, including the rights to life, self-determination, development, food, health, water and sanitation, housing, and more. Justice and equity became a central issue to dealing with climate change when climate change began affecting the ability for individuals to access basic human rights.

According to the International Bar Association climate change justice is defined as:

“To ensure communities, individuals and governments have substantive legal and procedural rights relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment and the means to take or cause measures to be taken within their national legislative and judicial systems, where necessary, at regional and international levels, to mitigate sources of climate change and provide for adaptation to its effects in a manner that respects human rights”.

Climate Equity means ensuring that all communities have the opportunity to benefit from resources that promote sustainable living, such as renewable energy, employment and adaptation solutions. Typically, minority, low-income and otherwise marginalized populations have little to no access to these options.

California Greenworks primarily serves the communities of south Los Angeles, most of which are disadvantaged communities designated by the Senate Bill 535. These communities are predominantly minorities with high unemployment rate, high housing burden and low educational attainment. In engaging youth of underserved communities, we are establishing pathways to brighter futures for more people, and especially those traditionally left out.

“It should be a civil right for everyone to have clean water and clean air,” founder and CEO Mike Meador said. “No one should be denied from having this. Yet – many are.”

Our 2022 Climate Equity Forum Series highlighted a number of speakers who each present on various topics surrounding climate change as it relates to California. Our speakers included;

Young Environmentalists in California Use their Voices for Positive Change

The past few years have led California with weather whiplash from heat waves, mega droughts and state-wide wildfires. California continues to see the destructive effects of climate change increase each year, and many young people look to the future with uncertainty.

A recent study found that nearly 60% of young people feel worried or extremely worried about climate change. In this same study, over half of respondents shared having fear for their future and hesitancy when thinking of major life decisions like having children.

Thankfully, young people are speaking up about the environmental injustice that is happening across the globe and are paving the way for change in our communities.

Here is a list of a few California-based young environmental activists to keep your eye on and support as we work together to improve the environment and quality of life in urban communities in California and beyond.

A spoken word poet, published author, and youth organizer with Youth Vs. Apocalypse (YVA). Aniya uses her poetry and organizing, to demand immediate and radical action to dismantle the foundational systems of oppression that are responsible for the climate crisis.

“I learned that climate justice is not just about fighting for our planet, but also about dismantling the oppressive systems that allowed the climate crisis to happen in the first place.”

Isha Clarke, 17

Oakland, CA

Co-Founder & Consultant at Youth Vs. Apocalypse (YVA) feels it is essential to pair environmental activism with environmental justice to create a just and equitable world, while maintaining a livable climate.

“I’ve since learned that climate change is the result of foundational systems of white supremacy, colonialism, capitalism, and patriarchy. We are in a state of climate crisis because communities of color, indigenous people, poor people, and many others have been deemed disposable. Climate justice is about dismantling these systems of oppression in every way that they exist- whether that be through environmental racism, police brutality, or concentration camps at the border.”

Kevin J. Patel, 18

Los Angeles, California

Founder of OneUpAction International, an organization that supports and empowers marginalized youth by providing them with the resources they need to be changemakers.

“Climate activism has always been associated with the white middle class demographic and not that of people of color or indigenous peoples. We don’t want to be tokenized. Within this movement people tend to forget that those who are in power have a sense of privilege and or are white, The way we narrate the movement must evolve to be more inclusive of black, indigenous and people of color activists/advocates.”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year … no, not the holidays – but Earth Day month! At California Greenworks we of course love the opportunity to educate about and activate positive climate change.

Earth Day 2022 is coming up on April 22. This year’s theme is Invest in the Planet. Our mission serves to do this every day, and we invite you to join us!

Earthday.org says we need to do three things to invest in our planet: act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). We’ve compiled some ideas for ways you can do this in south Los Angeles.

Act (boldly)

Join the great global cleanup movement to restore our planet. A part of Earthday.org’s campaign, the Great Global Cleanup calls on groups worldwide to remove billions of pieces from our shared spaces, reducing pollution and waste problems and preventing harm to wildlife and humans. California Greenworks hosts events throughout the year, please sign up here to be notified about upcoming cleanup opportunities. Register here

Change your consumer habits. Every purchase decision you make has potential consequences or benefits to the environment. This is based on the company’s sustainability and operations model. Generation Z is leading the way in this regard: 45% stopped purchasing certain brands because of ethical or sustainability concerns, according to a Deloitte survey.

Encourage the use of reusable utensils: Plastic utensils contribute greatly to our environmental pollution problems. These items are not recyclable, adding more insult to injury. You can change this: in daily life, carry a set of your own utensils! It’s fairly easy to find utensil sets made for on the go these days. Hosting a party? Consider whether you can use your regular housewares or a more environmentally friendly utensil option.

Innovate (broadly)

Promote the pollinators: Pollinators are vital to the world’s ecosystem, contributing to 90% of floral reproduction on our planet. Yet our actions, such as pesticide use, and destruction of natural habitats is drastically affecting their populations. Take Earthday.org’s pledge to go pesticide free, and explore which native plants can add beauty to your yard while encouraging pollinators to thrive.

Skip plastic, buy glass or paper – everything: Plastic is everywhere, but it is possible to make decisions that reduce or remove it from your life. Rather than use plastic containers, use glass: mason jars are great for food storage, and many brands make glass containers. When shopping, it may seem impossible to skip the plastic. Check out Earthday.org’s tips here.

Consider your foodprint: Defined as the “environmental impacts associated with the growing, producing, transporting, and storing of our food,” each person has the power to impact the planet with a smaller foodprint. Experiment with new recipes, invite friends over to try your reduced foodprint meals and share these new found flavors with the world. Check out Earthday.org’s ideas here.

Implement (equitably)

Plant a tree, save the planet: You can adopt a tree that grows in Los Angeles and join the monthly movement to make our planet a better place. Trees play an essential role in not just beautifying a neighborhood, by providing habit, reducing greenhouse gasses and urban heat island effect. Sponsor a monthly gift to allow us to not only plant a tree, but to provide continued care month after month to ensure your tree grows and thrives. Our focus in the south Los Angeles area provides often overlooked, minority and impoverished communities green space that boosts physical health and mental wellbeing. Yes, I want to plant a tree.

Get involved with California Greenworks: Equitable climate change is our heart and soul. We focus on underserved neighborhoods in south Los Angeles that are traditionally overlooked and sparse for greenspace. Those that live in these neighborhoods are often people of color and minority individuals who are disproportionately exposed to negative impacts of poor climate: think air quality, lack of green space contributing to decreased mental health and more. Sign up to get involved today.
