Our year of programming in review, from our Green Jobs Curriculum to our 2024 Climate Justice Conference, community tree plantings and more.

With the start of a new year, we wanted to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to you for your incredible support throughout 2024. Your generosity has not only made a significant impact on our organization, but has also brought joy and positive change to the lives of those we serve.

As we look forward to the coming year with hope and optimism, we wanted to reflect on the amazing accomplishments from this past year that YOU made possible.

2024 Programming Highlights

Environmental education

Providing curriculum, resources and tools to instruct youth and adults on environmental best practices, innovations and other important topics.

High School Education: In 2024, we hosted a number of educational programs for high school students. Through each program, we aim to educate and inspire young people to pursue lifestyles and careers that support a green economy.

Intro to Green Jobs: This class helps students build their resumes, practice interviewing skills, and develop a cover letter in a way that will attract careers in the green economy.

Environmental Literacy/Green Book Club: Students have the opportunity to choose from a selection of environmental books. On a regular basis, we meet with the students and discuss themes and concepts of the books. Once we finish a book, we take the students on a “field trip” that reinforces concepts we learned from the book.

Additionally, education opportunities included our Program Director, Michael finishing a semester course at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) in curriculum writing for climate change.

CJ Con 2024

Over 250 community members joined us as we built connections, exchanged ideas, shared experiences, and catalyzed action toward addressing the intersecting challenges of climate change and social injustice.

A few event highlights:

14 speakers

45 climate justice and environmental justice definitions brainstormed

11 vendor booths

45 upcycled planter coozies made

Revitalizing urban open space

Planting trees, developing green space, creating green space on school grounds, adding parks and implementing projects to protect the environment in underserved, ignored areas.

Tree Plantings:

Planted 15 trees in Carson in 6/24

And 32 trees in Inglewood by 2/24

Community Clean Up Days

Westside Neighborhood Park Community Clean Up- Feb. 2024

Queen Anne Community Clean Up – May 2024: community cleanup and outreach

Lincoln Memorial Park Community Cleanup – May 2024: Community clean up at abandoned cemetery

Over 100 community members participated in our Community Clean up and together we picked up about 185 pounds of garbage in 2024.

Blackwelder Community Greenbelt: California Greenworks is currently working to restore the loss of habitat in the Blackwelder Tract of lower Ballona Creek. We seek to create a green infrastructure network along the boundaries of Culver City and Los Angeles. Stormwater gardens, bike trails, and walking paths can unite this portion of the Lower Ballona Creek while increasing opportunities for the pollination of the native flora. In February 2024, we hosted our Blackwelder walkthrough of the project site. Participating partners included; Kamlager-Dove office, Woodard and Curran.

While some areas of the world settle into cooler months with autumn around the corner, some cities still brace themselves for the sweltering heat that these months often bring. For urban areas like Los Angeles, where California Greenworks Inc. is based, these months are not just hot—they’re exceptionally hotter due to a phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect.

Understanding the Urban Heat Island Effect

The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect refers to the temperature difference between urban areas and their rural surroundings. Cities tend to be warmer than their rural counterparts because of the high concentration of human activity and infrastructure. Buildings, roads, and other structures made from materials like concrete and asphalt absorb and retain heat during the day, releasing it slowly at night. This results in a temperature increase that can make urban centers significantly hotter than their neighboring rural areas.

In Los Angeles, where the effects of climate change are already being felt, the UHI effect exacerbates the situation. August and September are typically the hottest months of the year, but with the UHI effect, temperatures can soar even higher, leading to heatwaves that pose serious health risks to residents.

The Impact on Vulnerable Communities

While the UHI effect impacts all urban dwellers, certain communities are disproportionately affected. Low-income neighborhoods and communities of color often have fewer green spaces and are more likely to live in areas with a high density of heat-absorbing materials. These neighborhoods also tend to have less access to air conditioning and other cooling resources, making residents more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

At California Greenworks Inc., we are dedicated to environmental justice and improving quality of life in urban communities, addressing the UHI effect is a critical part of their mission. By focusing on sustainable urban planning and community education, California Greenworks Inc. aims to mitigate the impact of extreme heat and advocate for more equitable climate resilience measures.

What Can Be Done?

Increase Urban Green Spaces: Planting more trees and creating parks can help cool down city areas. Vegetation provides shade, and through a process called evapotranspiration, plants release water vapor, which cools the air.

Implement Cool Roofs and Pavements: Cool roofs are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than standard roofs, while cool pavements are made from materials that have lower heat capacities or are lighter in color. These solutions can significantly reduce the heat retained in urban environments.

Promote Energy Efficiency: Reducing energy consumption not only helps lower greenhouse gas emissions but also reduces the heat generated by buildings and vehicles. Programs that encourage energy efficiency, particularly in older buildings, can make a big difference in managing urban heat.

Community Awareness and Preparedness: Education is key to helping communities prepare for and respond to extreme heat. By raising awareness about the dangers of heat exposure and providing information on cooling centers and other resources, California Greenworks Inc. can help protect vulnerable populations.

Advocate for Policy Change: Local governments play a crucial role in implementing measures to combat the UHI effect. Advocacy for policies that support sustainable urban development, energy efficiency, and increased green spaces is essential for long-term change.

Recognizing leadership in the environmental space is crucial for driving meaningful and sustained change in addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation. Effective environmental leaders inspire and mobilize communities, advocate for robust policies, and implement innovative solutions that promote sustainability and conservation.

At California Greenworks, our programs align with three key areas:

Environmental education: Providing curriculum, resources and tools to instruct youth and adults on environmental best practices, innovations and other important topics.

Revitalizing urban open space: Planting trees, developing green space, creating green space on school grounds, adding parks and implementing projects to protect the environment in underserved, ignored areas.

Green economics advocacy: We promote youth to explore careers in the green economy, providing tools to enter the workforce. We also engage adults and provide opportunities for furthering education in the green industry.

By highlighting and supporting leaders in the environmental space, we can amplify their impact in all three of our focus areas. Furthermore, recognizing environmental leadership helps to hold governments and corporations accountable, ensuring that environmental considerations remain at the forefront of decision-making processes. We hope that in recognizing and celebrating environmental leaders creates a ripple effect that can lead to substantial and lasting improvement in the quality of life in urban communities in Southern California.

Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, exacerbating existing inequalities and disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities around the world. In the
fight for climate justice, technology emerges as a powerful tool to address environmental disparities and promote equity while advancing sustainability goals.

Empowering Communities: Technology has the potential to empower communities to take action on climate change and advocate for their rights. Digital platforms and mobile applications enable information sharing, community organizing, and grassroots mobilization, empowering individuals to participate in decision-making processes and demand accountability from governments and corporations. By providing access to information, resources, and support networks, technology can amplify the voices of marginalized communities and ensure that their perspectives are heard in climate policy discussions. At its most basic (and most important), technology and tools are humanity’s means of externalizing cognitive processes. Climate change is an existential problem that will require significant cognitive load.
Promoting Resilience: Climate change disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, exacerbating existing social, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities. However, technology can play a crucial role in building resilience and adapting to climate impacts. From early warning systems and disaster preparedness tools to climate-smart agriculture and sustainable energy solutions, technology offers innovative approaches to strengthen community resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate-related hazards. By leveraging technology, communities can better anticipate, prepare for, and respond to climate risks, ensuring that no one is left behind in the face of environmental challenges.
Driving Transformative Change: Technology drives transformative change by catalyzing innovation, fostering collaboration, and scaling up solutions to address climate change and promote social justice. From renewable energy technologies and energy-efficient infrastructure to carbon capture and storage solutions, technological innovations offer pathways to decarbonize economies and transition to a more sustainable and equitable future. By investing in research, development, and deployment of clean technologies, governments, businesses, and civil society can accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and create new opportunities for economic growth, job
creation, and social development.

In the pursuit of climate justice, technology emerges as a critical enabler of equity, resilience, and sustainability. By empowering communities, promoting resilience, and driving
transformative change, technology offers promising solutions to address environmental disparities and advance social justice. However, realizing the full potential of technology
requires collective action, investment, and commitment from governments, businesses, civil society, and the global community. Together, we can harness the power of technology to build
a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world for present and future generations.

Our Climate Justice Conference will significantly contribute to advancing climate justice by providing a platform for diverse stakeholders to come together, exchange ideas, share
experiences, and catalyze action towards addressing the intersecting challenges of climate change and social injustice. Here’s why such a conference is crucial:

Raise Awareness and Build Understanding: this conference, dedicated to climate justice, can raise awareness about the disproportionate impacts of climate change on marginalized
communities and vulnerable populations. By highlighting the connections between social inequality, environmental degradation, and climate change, the conference can foster a deeper understanding of the root causes and systemic injustices that exacerbate climate vulnerabilities.

Empower Communities: Our climate justice conference will provide an opportunity for impacted communities to amplify their voices, share their stories, and advocate for their rights. By centering the voices and experiences of frontline communities, indigenous peoples, women, youth, and other marginalized groups, the conference can empower communities to participate in decision-making processes, shape climate policies, and demand equitable solutions that prioritize their needs and priorities.

Promote Intersectionality: Climate justice recognizes that climate change intersects with other forms of oppression and discrimination, including race, gender, class, ethnicity, and nationality. This conference on climate justice can promote intersectional approaches that address the interconnected nature of social and environmental injustices. By fostering dialogue and collaboration across diverse sectors and movements, the conference can promote solidarity and collective action towards building more inclusive and equitable societies.

Share Best Practices and Solutions: Our climate justice conference will provide a platform for sharing best practices, innovative solutions, and successful strategies for addressing climate vulnerabilities and promoting social resilience. By showcasing successful case studies, pilot projects, and community-led initiatives, the conference can inspire action and replication of proven approaches in different contexts. Participants can learn from each other’s experiences, identify opportunities for collaboration, and leverage collective knowledge to drive positive change.

Mobilize Resources and Support: With all our participants, this conference can mobilize resources, support, and commitments from governments, businesses, philanthropic
organizations, and civil society actors to invest in climate resilience, adaptation, and mitigation efforts that prioritize social justice. By showcasing the economic, social, and environmental benefits of investing in climate justice initiatives, the conference can encourage increased funding, partnerships, and collaboration to scale up impactful interventions and address systemic barriers to progress.

Influence Policy and Decision-Making: We aim for our conference to influence policy and decision-making at local, national, and international levels by providing evidence-based
research, policy recommendations, and advocacy tools to policymakers, legislators, and government officials. By convening experts, policymakers, and stakeholders, the conference
can facilitate dialogue, consensus-building, and policy innovation on key issues related to climate justice, such as just transition, climate finance, environmental justice, and human
rights.

The CJ Con, 2024, will serve as a catalyst for advancing climate justice by raising awareness, empowering communities, promoting intersectionality, sharing best practices, mobilizing
resources, and influencing policy and decision-making. By bringing together diverse stakeholders in a collaborative and inclusive forum, the conference can contribute to building a
more just, equitable, and sustainable future for all.

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month. During the month of April (and all year round) we celebrate and honor the invaluable contributions of volunteers to our communities. A volunteer is defined as a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).

At California Greenworks, our volunteers are the foundation that allows us to carry out our programming to improve the environment and quality of life in urban communities around Los Angeles.

Volunteers Make Our World Greener

We hosted our Community Cleanup event on February 10 at the beautiful Westside Neighborhood Park. Thanks to all of our volunteers, we were able to clean up more than 100 pounds of litter!

Four of the volunteers at the event were the Artiga Family. Their entire family showed up and worked together to clean up waste in our community. After the event, we followed up to ask them about their experience. Here’s what they had to say:

Q: How did you hear about California Greenworks Community Cleanup Event?

A: We first heard of the organization on a web search when our family (2 dad and two, 11 year boy/girl twins) were looking for a way to do some community service around the Martin Luther King holiday a few years ago as the pandemic was lightening up. California Greenworks was sponsoring an event in the south LA area and were eager to participate.

Q: What made you want to take part in our Community Cleanup Event?

A: We are eager to participate because we saw this as a way of helping our larger LA city community. Even though we didn’t live in that part of south LA we deeply believe in the words of MLK that, “When one struggles we all struggle” and this was a way to help our larger city and its members.

Q: What was your favorite part or highlight of the Community Cleanup Event?

A: The best part of the cleanups was knowing we were contributing to our city and doing this as a family. This tapped into my sense that “tiny steps can lead to many miles” in the sense that when we take some small actions together we can make a lot of good progress. At the end of the events, the streets and parks that we helped clean up looked so much better. I asked my kids what they liked and they said “I liked cleaning…it was fun as a family.”

Thank You!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has donated their time and talent to support California Greenwork over the years! Thank you for supporting our goals to create; environmental justice and climate equity, sustainable, community-based restoration to eliminate urban blight and promote green space development, innovative, modern and actionable green education and curriculum, and advocacy for green job creation and economic development.

Join us on May 4!

Join us this Saturday, May 4, for our Community Cleanup event starting at 10:00 AM! We are excited to gather together for a day of community bonding and environmental stewardship.

This event is all about coming together as a neighborhood and making a positive impact on our local environment. We will be working together to clean up the park, removing litter and debris, and ensuring that our beloved park remains a clean and safe space for everyone to enjoy.

A butterfly garden is a carefully cultivated space designed to attract and support butterflies throughout their life cycle. These gardens are specifically crafted to provide the essential elements that butterflies need to thrive, including food, shelter and breeding grounds. Typically, butterfly gardens feature a variety of flowering plants that produce nectar, serving as a vital food source for adult butterflies. These plants are often selected based on their ability to attract a diverse range of butterfly species.

One of the key components of a butterfly garden is the inclusion of host plants. These are plants that caterpillars feed on exclusively, providing essential nutrients for their growth and development. By incorporating a variety of host plants into the garden, enthusiasts can support a broader range of butterfly species. Common host plants include milkweed for monarch butterflies and parsley for swallowtails.

Beyond plant selection, the layout and design of a butterfly garden are also crucial. Butterflies are particularly drawn to sunny, open spaces with sheltered areas for resting and basking in the sun. Additionally, incorporating features like rocks, logs and shallow puddles provides butterflies with essential resources such as water and minerals.

Why are they Important?

Butterfly gardens are important for several reasons, primarily centered around conservation, biodiversity and ecological balance. Here are a few key reasons butterfly gardens are so important:

Pollination: Butterflies, like bees, play a crucial role in pollination. As they fly from flower to flower in search of nectar, they also transfer pollen, aiding in the fertilization of plants. Creating habitats that attract butterflies ultimately contributes to the reproduction of many plant species, including those important for agriculture.

Biodiversity: Butterfly gardens promote biodiversity by providing a habitat for not only butterflies but also other insects, birds and small mammals. By creating a diverse array of plants and building conditions for various species, butterfly gardens help support a rich and vibrant ecosystem. This biodiversity is essential for maintaining ecosystem resilience and stability.

Conservation: Many butterfly species face threats such as habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change. Butterfly gardens serve as refuges for these species, offering essential resources like food, shelter and breeding sites. By creating and maintaining butterfly gardens, we can contribute to the conservation of threatened and endangered butterfly species, helping to prevent their decline and potential extinction.

Education and Awareness: Butterfly gardens provide valuable opportunities for education and awareness about the importance of insects and their role in our environment. Through observing butterflies in their natural habitat, people can learn about their life cycles, behaviors and ecological significance. This firsthand experience fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for these fascinating creatures, inspiring individuals to take action to protect them and their habitats.

How can you design & build your own butterfly garden?

Designing and building a butterfly garden involves careful consideration of various factors to create a habitat that attracts and supports butterflies throughout their entire life cycle. Let’s breakdown a step-by-step guide to help you plan and execute your own butterfly garden:

Site Selection: Creating a successful butterfly garden starts with choosing a sunny location, as butterflies are attracted to warmth and sunlight. Ensure the area receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. *Also, consider factors like soil quality, drainage, and accessibility!

Research Native Species: Research native butterfly species in your area and select plants that serve as both nectar sources for adult butterflies and host plants for caterpillars. It is important to select native plants so they are well-adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, making them more attractive to butterflies and easier to maintain.

Plant Selection: Choose a variety of flowering plants with different shapes, colors, and bloom times to provide a continuous source of nectar throughout the growing season. Include both annuals and perennials to ensure year-round interest. *You can incorporate host plants specific to the butterflies you want to attract! Some popular choices include milkweed for monarch butterflies and parsley for swallowtails.

Layout and Design: Arrange plants in clusters rather than scattering them individually. This makes it easier for butterflies to locate food sources and creates more attractive visual displays. Leave open spaces for butterflies to bask in the sun and provide sheltered areas like rocks or shrubs for protection from wind and predators. *Check out a butterfly garden map/design below

7. Maintenance: Regularly maintain your butterfly garden by watering plants during dry periods, removing weeds, and deadheading spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.

8. Educational Signage: As an added benefit, consider adding educational signage or interpretive displays to your butterfly garden to inform visitors about the importance of butterflies, their life cycle, and the plants that support them.

By following the steps above and incorporating the principles of butterfly conservation into your garden design, you can create a beautiful and sustainable habitat that attracts a diverse array of butterflies and contributes to their well-being and conservation.

Our year of programming in review, from our Climate Equity Series to our CELA awards, community tree plantings and more.

As the holiday season is upon us, we wanted to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to you for your incredible support throughout the year. Your generosity has not only made a significant impact on our organization, but has also brought joy and positive change to the lives of those we serve.

As we look forward to the coming year with hope and optimism, we wanted to reflect on the amazing accomplishments from this past year that YOU made possible.

2023 Programming Highlights

Our programs align with the 3 key areas of our mission: environmental education, urban revitalization and green economics advocacy. Individual programs may focus on just one of these areas, or may have elements of all three – depending on the specific project. Here is a look at our 2023 programming recap.

Environmental Education

Providing curriculum, resources and tools to instruct youth and adults on environmental best practices, innovations and other important topics.

2023 Climate Equity Series: Climate Equity means ensuring that all communities have the opportunity to benefit from resources that promote sustainable living, such as renewable energy, employment and adaptation solutions. In October, we hosted our Climate Equity Forum series at Stoneview Nature Center featuring US Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove. The event attracted a nationwide audience of 75+ individuals.

Sustainable Holiday Boutique and Crafting: As a way to promote sustainable gifting, we hosted our first Sustainable Holiday Boutique and Crafting earlier this month at the Stoneview Nature Center in Culver City. All vendors at the event were selling sustainable, ethically sourced crafts and gifts to allow the community to complete holiday shopping with earth-friendly gifts.

G.W. Carver Environmental Legacy Awards (CELA): As our biggest fundraiser and event of the year, the event honors the legacy of Dr. George Washington Carver and his well-documented past, as an inventor, educator, scientist, painter, botanist and conservationist. While also honoring the accomplishments of members in the community who have made extraordinary accomplishments within the environmental movement. Our 2023 event featured some amazing guest speakers including; Los Angeles City Councilmember, Curren Price, California Senator,Sydney Kamlager, and Comedian and Actor/ Comedian, Kente Scott. Our 2023 honorees included; First African American Astronaut Candidate and renowned sculpture, Ed Dwight, Director of STEM Education Synergy Academies,Barbara Shannon, EdD, Executive Director of the Baldwin Hills Conservancy, David McNeil, and Chief Sustainability and Economic Development Officer, Nancy Sutley.

Revitalizing Urban Open Space

Planting trees, developing green space, creating green space on school grounds, adding parks and implementing projects to protect the environment in underserved, ignored areas.

Tree Plantings: In 2023, we hosted two tree planting events in Edward Vincent Park and HACLA and planted a total of 35 trees in the Los Angeles area.

MLK Day of Service: On January 14, 2023, we hosted a Community Cleanup day at Hyde Park and partnered with LADWP volunteers.

In 2023, we expanded our partnership with Baldwin Hills and Urban Watershed Conservancy to move the needle forward on the project. Here are a few renderings for the project.

Green Economics Advocacy

We promote youth to explore careers in the green economy, providing tools to enter the workforce. We also engage adults and provide opportunities for furthering education in the green industry.

High School Education: In 2023, we hosted a number of educational programs for high school students.

Primary Education Programming:

Green Art: From Kindergarten to high school seniors, California Greenworks will host sustainable and upcycled art projects in classrooms. An example of a green art project could be setting up recycling containers, teaching the students about the recycling process, and completing an art project together.

Greening School/Site: Designed for middle and high school students, we educate how students can make their school more “green”. The students then research and design a green project that could be implemented in their school. Students learn how to conduct such a larger project, how to analyze data collected, and at the end students present their findings to school/site administrators.

Ocean Explorers: This is a 4-week program for middle and high school aged students to learn about marine science, environmental science and conservation principles. Students have the opportunity to participate in science experiments and field trips to ocean and marine centers.

Looking to 2024

In the new year, we will continue to expand and develop our Blackwelder Community Greenbelt project, design and implement more educational curriculum, and host our EJ Conference.

We look forward to the coming year with hope and optimism, and we are excited to continue our journey together. Thank you for being a vital part of our community, and for making a positive impact that extends far beyond the holiday season.

Be a part of our impact

There are a number of ways you can join us in 2024 from joining our email list, adopting a tree, hosting one of our educational programs, attending one of our events, volunteering your time, or telling a friend about us.

Jessy has served 10 years, both professionally and voluntarily, working with nonprofits. She holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and Resource Management with an emphasis in Marine Sciences. In her freetime, she is a SCUBA instructor and enjoys freediving, snorkeling, surfing, skateboarding, rock climbing, camping and running around with her dog.

Here’s more from Jessy about why she’s a part of California Greenworks:

I am from a small town in a valley of southern California. Compared to the beach, the valley climate is cold at night and very hot during the day, with little breeze. I grew up going to the beach as often as I could, and partially the reason behind it was the temperature change.

When it comes to environmental issues, the lack of understanding about the severity of the state of the planet is something that worries me. Globally, climate change is my biggest concern, as well as agricultural methods, commercial fishing and overall natural resource usage.

I hope to build a stronger connection to the community and get our name out there more. I hope to bring attention to other environmental issues as well. I have 10 years, both professionally and voluntarily, working for nonprofits serving the community. I think I bring a new perspective to the team and am slowly building a network of other groups in the community to expand our reach!
